New site finally up and running

Finally, I've had some time to put my website together.

After a few design changes, I'm finally uploading content. I've considered different approaches and different themes but in general my new site will be a blend of portfolio and blog. I've already added some previously published articles and soon I'll put together a portfolio of my favourite images. In the meantime I've also added images on the travel category. Once the new site is complete I think this blog will fall much more silent then what it already has.

Feel free to visit the new website here and leave a comment, if you are that way inclined.

Australian Travel: Digging up the past

Ned Kelly has held a special place in Australian history since his execution almost 128 years ago.

Understanding the story of this Australian Bushranger and his gang goes a long way to explaining many aspects of the modern Australian beliefs. Often, it's these at first subtle, yet significant differences to similar nations that are overlooked when explaining Australian attitudes.

What has been particularly interesting is the current archaeological dig at Glenrowan, in Victoria (see map).

"Seven-and-a-half thousand archaeological treasures have been uncovered at the site where outlaw Ned Kelly fought his way into Australia's history." Read a recent news article here for information about the recent discoveries.

And, if you're interested, read more about the Kelly gang and its place in Australian history.

For travellers to Australia, the story of Ned Kelly is something worth exploring. Travellers can also retrace the steps of Kelly and his gang.

For many Australians, Kelly's story is one of standing up against tyranny, defying the establishment and stands as further fuel in the debate about whether Australia should cut its ties with Britain and become a republic. UK media, (well at least it was 7 years ago), was still having a hard time accepting that Australians have their own sense of history with its own set of heroes. Scoffing and jeering at Australians and looking for any news to support their warped views appears to occupy the minds of many in the British media and its audience.

"In 2000, a special Sixty Minutes episode revealed that 91 per cent of people polled believed that Ned had not received a fair trial when he was sentenced to death for murder. Others go further, suggesting he was the victim of a vicious system; a young man hounded into crime and whose death fell little short of martyrdom. Even in his own brief lifetime, he became a legend."

No matter what your opinion, if you haven't looked into the facts behind his story before, Kelly is certain to fascinate.

Travel under a changing climate

I've been a bit busy in recent months. A trip to Fiji and the start of what could be a year-long owner-builder project has left little time to update blogs and web sites. With my part-time work with the new ECO online, time has certainly been limited.

I'm planning to finish a new personal web site I've made which will display all my published writing and provide photography examples - as a kind of portfolio of work.

Once completed I'll post its link here and Sand Traveller will return to a purely travel-based blog. It's new aim will be to provide an insiders view of eco, ethical and indigenous travel in Australia and the nearby region. After all, the times are changing and travel in an altered world climate and a time of declining supplies of cheap oil means our journeys will take on a new dimension with considerations greater than just your available budget.

Over the years I've become a bit tired of the somewhat prejudiced views, especially those provided by UK travel sites on Australia. Many of these sites and blogs provide information based purely on preconceived ideas and/or limited experiences. Sand Traveller is going to bring back the personal angle. It is going to be a blog that paints the picture, doesn't patronise and provides a return to the old-style travellers tales. Well, at least that's my hope.

Stay tuned, take a look at the existing information and always feel free to comment and suggest topics and areas to cover.
